Health Advisory Amid Rising Smog Risks

The Ministry of National Health has issued a public advisory about the rising health risks from smog in Islamabad. The warning comes amid the ongoing dry and cold season, which worsens smog levels in the city. The ministry highlighted that the smog poses serious health threats, especially for vulnerable groups. These include children, the elderly, and people with chronic health conditions.

According to the advisory, the particles in smog can aggravate respiratory, heart, and eye conditions. These pollutants can cause severe health problems for those already suffering from such illnesses. The ministry emphasized the need for caution, especially when smog levels are high. Health officials urged citizens to stay informed and take necessary precautions to protect themselves.

Residents are advised to minimize outdoor activities during heavy smog. The ministry recommends keeping windows and doors closed to prevent indoor exposure to polluted air. People are also urged to avoid travelling to areas with high pollution. Furthermore, burning wood or waste should be avoided, as it contributes to worsening air quality.

Special attention is needed for vulnerable groups like children, senior citizens, and those with chronic illnesses. They should remain indoors as much as possible. The ministry also advises wearing masks if going outside. In case of eye irritation, clean water should be used to rinse the eyes. Asthma and respiratory patients should ensure they have their medications with them.

Other recommendations include drinking plenty of water, reducing vehicle use, and supporting government efforts to improve air quality. Citizens are encouraged to seek medical help if they experience difficulty breathing, chest pain, or eye irritation due to smog exposure. Prompt medical attention is crucial for managing the adverse effects of smog on health.

With the arrival of winter, air quality has worsened across Punjab, leaving several cities shrouded in smog. Lahore has become the worst affected, with air pollution levels rising to 382 AQI, making it one of the most polluted cities in the world. Meanwhile, other major cities in Punjab, including Gujranwala, Faisalabad, and Multan, are also experiencing hazardous air pollution. Gujranwala recorded the highest AQI at 457, followed by Faisalabad at 330 and Multan at 282.

The surge in pollution is linked to seasonal factors, including agricultural burning and low-grade diesel fumes. As temperatures drop, pollutants mix with fog, creating a dense layer of smog that affects the region’s air quality. Doctors are warning citizens of the harmful effects of smog on health. They advise wearing masks to protect against respiratory issues, eye irritation, and other health risks.
